What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy, is a method of inducing a trance or a dream-like state of deep relaxation in order to treat disorders of a mainly psychological or emotional origin.
Most people today have begun to accept that relaxation, breathing and meditation techniques all help to combat stress and aid us in managing those stress levels. Hypnosis is just another one of these techniques that I use to aid my clients to deeply relax and explore the deeper layers of the subconscious that are usually inaccessible in the normal conscious state, in order to affect change.
How does Hypnosis work?
My method of hypnotherapy uses therapeutic relaxation and direct suggestion; this is very much like a guided relaxation process that has the addition of hypnotic suggestions.
Many people believe the urban myth that hypnosis is a dangerous state in which the Hypnotherapist can control you or make you do things against your will. This is a common misrepresentation created by sensationalist individuals and circus hype. Actually, we all go into trance a couple of times a day and if you went into hypnosis it would be only with your agreement, and you would be in a normal dream state.
There are many ways to deal with stress, anxiety, depression and a host of other issues. Some people turn to medication; others turn to alternative and natural therapies, some people run away and some people actually look for the root cause and deal with the issues. We will work on uncovering and resolving the root causes of your issues and use them to gain knowledge, insight and wisdom into your life.
What does Hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is completely relaxing and common sensations can include feeling heavy or light. Others have described the feeling as though they were in a comfortable meditative state. Almost invariably it’s described as a pleasant experience. Some people feel a sense of personal freedom, where they are carefree to let go and relax even more into their unique sensations.
Hypnosis is not about mind control or implanting false memories. My professionalism and strict code of ethics means that you need not worry at all. You will never feel ‘out of control’, you ultimately, decide what you want to do or not do. During your hypnotherapy session, you will have full awareness, as well as be in complete control, and you can stop the session at any time you want.
What can Hypnosis treat?
Hypnotherapy is very effective as a treatment for anxiety disorders, stress management and relaxation. Hypnotherapy can help an individual to change the below listed and many other things as well as to empower the individual to achieve their goals:
Thoughts and ideas
Thoughts and ideas can be problematic when they are intrusive, unrealistic or upsetting.
Examples of such thoughts include:
- Continually thinking that one is suffering from an illness, despite medical reassurance
- Doubting whether a partner is faithful
- Thinking negatively rather than seeing the good side
- Wondering whether others are being negatively judgmental
People often experience irrational fears. The object of the fear can be almost anything, but typical examples include:
- fear of visiting the dentist/going for medical procedure
- social and other
- situations, such as going out, enclosed spaces, or the dark
- blood, needles etc.
People can suffer from a wide variety of feelings which can be distressing if too severe or too regular.
- panic attacks
- low self esteem
- lack of confidence
People can find themselves in the grip of many habits that they seem unable to control, eg:
- eating disorders, over/under eating
- poor sleep patterns/insomnia
- more deep-seated compulsions.
